Well Done To Every Runner on Marathon Day!

A big well done to all runners who crossed the finishing line today at the London Marathon with thousands helping to fund their charities and good causes. It was a hot, sunny day for another year's marathon with temperatures hitting 22.2C. Emotions ran high and celebrities passed on their wisdom as they ran amongst 56, 000 other runners at the city-wide event.

Vaseline!

As part of one's preparations, an intimate tip shared by Kelly Brook would be to not forget to pack one's pot of vaseline (2)! She described her agonising experience of chafing fabrics rubbing against her skin and advised to add this to the running pack to prevent frictions, burns and bleeding (2). This was an item observably not packed by another celebrity; John Terry. The famous ex Chelsea footballer admitted that he was forced to walk during his race 'as blood poured from his nipples' during his marathon ordeal (5).

Clear One's Schedule!

The comedian, Joel Dommett, completed his marathon race, but woke up in an ambulance post half way after fainting at mile 17 (4)! He explained that his 'hectic schedule' meant that he lacked sleep along with loading his body with crucial carbohydrates required as part of his pre-race preparations. He admits to have 'over done it' with the travelling prior to his big day and the 'terrible planning' may have lead to his unexpected fainting (4).

Start Preparations as Early as Possible (Life Event Pending)

The Towie star, Mark Wright, was agonisingly forced to pull out two days prior to his 26.2 mile race from a soleus muscle tear within his calf (1). He explains that his injury started off mild but gradually became worse as the weeks went on during his training regime. Despite an 'intense rehabilitation program', he was unable to recover in time and was 'heart broken' over the decision to opt out. He admits to have started his training 'late', but in fairness to Mark he has had his hands full with a new arrival of his baby daughter and so will hopefully attempt to complete the race next year (1).

Another Marathon Day, Another Successful Adventure...

Overall, it was another successful adventure for the thousands of runners at the 45th London marathon edition (3). The event grows bigger by the year and attracted a WORLD RECORD for the number of finishers by surpassing a previous best record of 55, 646 set in the New York marathon. The race also attracted record crowd and spectator numbers with over EIGHT HUNDRED THOUSAND people cheering the runners on. Race director Hugh Brasher said that approximately 60, 000 more than usual supporters attended due to the warm weather and higher number of participants (3).
